Welcome to Class 5

Summer Term.

Welcome to our class web page, please see below to see what we are learning during the final half term of this year.

Computing – 3D landscapes. http://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-pro/new-in-2017?gclid=CPKmg-ztlNQCFdYYGwodWaIIbw

This is a terrific topic where the children get to use a piece of software called Sketch up. This allows the children to create different 3D scenes.

French - Describing scenes. This topic will build on the children's French skills so far this year, they will learn new words about being at the beach, developing this into saying full sentences and having conversations with others.

History - Anglo - Saxons. http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zxsbcdm

The children will be learning where the Anglo-Saxons came from and the possible reasons for why they settled in, we will be using different sources of information and artefacts to find out more about how they lived including their houses, clothes and religious beliefs.

Geography - Volcanoes and other natural disasters. https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/volcanoes

We have been finding out about where volcanoes are situated around the world, we will find out about the different types of volcano and learn about the signs that a volcano may erupt. The aftermath of an eruption and how it effects the local area will conclude this topic.

PE – Swimming (Thursday).

This will continue every week throughout the term.

Science – Human timeline.

The children will learn about the different stages of human life and what may happen during them. This will begin at birth, through teenage life right up to changes that may happen during old age.

RE – Jesus and the gospels. http://www.dltk-bible.com/%5C/cv/index.htm

This topic develops the children's understanding of the different gospels in the new testament, the stories will ask the children to think about what values are important to them and how they can use these to lead their own lives. An example of this is the gospel of the wise and foolish builders, this will encourage the children to think about why it is important to have strong foundations in their lives.

DT - 3D drawing and scultpture.

Coupled with the computing unit this unit will help the children to practice their 3D drawing skills, they will then go on to make different sculptures including houses, boats and stadiums.

Maths - Percentages, measures. angles , written methods and indices.

The children will find out to find a percentage of a number, using their fractions work from earlier in a term, the other topics will be a recap of year five so far but will immerse the children in different problem solving techniques to stretch their learning further.

English - Persuasive writing, non-chronological reports and fantasy stories.

The children will learn how to write to persuade people by using a reasoned argument, the following unit of non-chronological reports will link to our geography work on natural disaster. This will provide the children with a great opportunity to use standard English is different ways when writing non-fiction pieces. The children's fantasy stories will be based on the story of the Hobbit that we are using for our guided sessions, we will be developing new characters and settings and trying to use the same style as the author.

Main text - The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.
